Lajja begins with the aggressive reaction of Bangladesh’s Muslims on the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992. They crack down on their Hindu siblings and destroy hundreds of their shrines. But who is virtually responsible for this atrocity, loot, rape and temple demolition? Needless to say that those Hinduist organizations in India, who demolished the Babri Masjid and put a vicious face of vengeance politics in front of the world, forgot that just as Muslims are minorities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are Hindu minorities.
The author has rightly recognized that India is not a separate Jambudweep. If a venom is born in India, its pain will not only have to be borne by India, but that pain will spread first in the whole world, at least in the neighboring countries. Therefore, all of us should take care of each other’s sensibilities and create a harmonious society in which Hindus, Muslims and all other communities can live in happiness and peace.
“Beneath the terror of the majority is the problem of protecting minorities ‘Lajja’, which should be seen in the context of Bangladesh where Muslims are in the minority.” – Rajendra Yadav. “Those who read ‘Lajja’ as just a novel or literary work will fail to understand that ‘Lajja’ is a deviant and distracted to his conscience in front of the political and religious authorities of South Asian countries including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.”
The single woman has a deeply human, modern, secular and fearless voice. This is a distasteful and angry scream of the oppressed humanitarian citizenship of the subcontinent, against inhuman acts such as a God, Prophet, religion or a nightmare of medieval absolutist entities perpetuated in the name of old beliefs and myths to this day. ‘Lajja’ is not poof, but a poignant and fearless document of compassion. ” – Uday Prakash
